This study provides clarity for this relationship by examining the effect that level of leisure participation, mediated by place attachment, had on an individual’s level of environmental concern. A questionnaire comprised of three individual measures of serious leisure, place attachment and environmental concern was distributed to rock climbers in the Shawangunk Mountains of New York State (N = 151). A mediation analysis, as outlined by Kenny, Kashy and Bolger (1998) was used to quantitatively explore this relationship. While evidence could not be garnered of a mediation effect, a direct, although weak, effect was discovered between serious leisure participation and environmental concern. Exploratory analyses later revealed a strong direct relationship between serious leisure participation and place attachment.","abstract_html":"The links between outdoor recreation participation and environmentalism are hazy at best.
