The presence of M1 and M2 macrophages in human atherosclerotic lesions has been suggested. Wnt5a is a noncanonical member of the wingless family of proteins that is expressed in human macrophages in different inflammatory diseases including atherosclerosis. These observations led us to hypothesize that Wnt5a secretion/expression is related to M1 and M2 subsets in atherosclerosis. To investigate this hypothesis, we performed immunohistochemical analysis using Wnt5a, CD68 (for macrophages) and CD163 (for M2 macrophages) in human atherosclerotic tissue sections derived from the carotid arteries of patients undergoing endarterectomy.
