X-ray Scattering Study Of Capillary Condensation In Mesoporous Silica
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe capillary condensation deforms a nanoporous material due to the capillary force generated by the fluid inside the pores. In-situ small and wide angle x-ray scattering(S/WAXS) were used to study the deformation with respect to relative vapor pressure of the fluid. Periodic mesoporous silica such as MCM-41 and SBA-15 were synthesized and used as the samples with water as the capillary condensation agent.The gas sorption method and SAXS were used to extract the pore parameters of the samples.The stresses acting on the silica scaffold due to the presence of water in the pores were deduced by careful analysis of various forces acting on it. The Poisson's ratio and elastic moduli of the two samples and their annealed forms were estimated and compared quantitatively. Our study demonstrates a novel WAXS-based technique for calculating the mechanical properties of nanoporous materials with much wider applicability than the previously reported SAXS technique.
