To make learning and assessing the colonoscopy procedural skills easy and interactive, an active training model is being developed and evaluated. To measure the applied forces load cells are used. The time to complete the procedure was measured using light detecting sensors. Load cells and light detecting sensors were interfaced with a data acquisition system connected to a computer. User interface was programmed in LabVIEW to acquire the force data and record the time taken to complete the procedure. 30 medical students as well as expert colonoscopists were recruited to perform the colonoscopy procedure on ACTM. The students were educated to handle the equipment and to perform the colonoscopy. The data was analyzed statistically to determine the effectiveness of the device to distinguish the participants based on their level of expertise. The improvement in the skills set of the students was evaluated. The results of this research suggest that the ACTM will be an effective tool to integrate in to the medical training program.
