The Revised and Expanded Version: A Series of Etchings

The Revised and Expanded Version is a series of large-scale intaglio prints that explore notions of beauty using line and text. Etched and printed over a series of eight different states, the prints illustrate their own evolution over time and a process of redaction and revision. Through the etching process the prints were simultaneously constructed and deconstructed by the processes of their making. The images began as a “life-sized” self-portrait filled with philosophical texts on beauty, then followed by a layer of more personal, diaristic writing. The plates were reworked and printed many times, culminating in their final states as they filled in more densely with text and aggressive marks. At the climax of the series, text and aggressive marks on the plate built up a dramatic tension between figure and ground, indicative of the tenuous relationship between the internal and external. Finally, the ground was subdued by the destruction of the etching process, while the figure remained, dense and unbroken, thus concluding the series.
