Dancing Around Costuming: A Symbiotic Relationship of Disciplines, Costume Design for Dance 2011: Parallel and Intersect

My MFA thesis project is to design costumes for the School of Theatre and Dance's fall faculty dance concert, Dance 2011; Parallel and Intersection. The challenges presented by costuming the entire dance concert are: 1) To design 5 new pieces, with casts of 14, 12, 11, 7 & 2, the largest of which will become integrated into the Kent Dance Ensembles repertoire, 2) To embellish an existing design for a trio, 3) To articulate designs through renderings, 4) To achieve a design which satisfies the choreographer's vision, 5) To develop skills with spandex and chiffon construction. I will document my analytical approach to costuming dance via my journal and template. This thesis project demonstrates my knowledge, skills, and techniques as a dancer/costume designer. Thus, I intend to incorporate my experience and pedagogical insight as an assistant teacher into my analysis of the above mentioned challenges. In the fall of 2011, I have been participating in the level III Modern Dance Technique, taught by Barbara Verlezza and Kim Karpanty. Attending the class has provided me with a unique opportunity to understand each dancer's body in motion to aid in designing flattering style lines. The manipulation of the dancer's body by costumes emphasizes truly ineffable qualities of life expressed through dance.
