DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF AN ANALYTICAL CHARGE-HOLD-VENT MODEL FOR CRYOGENIC TANK CHILLDOWN

Abstract

dc:description

A transient Charge-Hold-Vent (CHV) analytical model has been developed and validatedwith hydrogen experimental CHV data. The model was found to be within 7% agreementof the data. The model simulates natural convection and jet impingement heat transferinteractions using quasi-unsteady steps in time and tracks the fluids thermodynamic behaviorthrough REFPROP. The additional cooling potential made available through the cyclicventing technique is calculated in the code. The model can simulate multiple CHV cyclesand provide predictions on the amount of fluid mass used for each cycle. The impact ofvarying tank geometry, nozzle position, and fluid type may be simulated and consideredwhen planning future CHV tests.
