TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION AND FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS OF DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING SPINAL IMPLANTS FOR THE TREATMENT OF EARLY-ONSET PEDIATRIC SCOLIOSIS
Abstract
dc:descriptionScoliosis affects approximately 3% of the US population. In order to treat early-onset scoliosis, clinicians utilize lengthening rods to fix the deformed scoliotic curvature. The implant surgery is followed by adjustment surgery, performed every six months or one year to adjust the lengthening rods and control early-onset scoliosis progression. Apto Orthopaedics, a company based in Akron, Ohio cofounded by Dr. Stephen Fening from the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron and Dr. Todd Ritzmann from the Akron Children’s Hospital, with an aim to non-invasively adjust the spinal implants through magnetic actuation from outside the body. The thesis will focus on the technology commercialization and feasibility analysis of Apto Orthopaedic device for non-invasively adjusting the spinal implants for the treatment of early-onset pediatric scoliosis.
