The Threshing Place

THE THRESHING PLACE is an original collection of poetry that investigates the impact of trauma on the female sense of self. The work is grounded in both the psychoanalytic and enlightenment perspectives of trauma--the former taking a Freudian stance, considering it to be that which persists in haunting and confusing the subject, and the latter considering trauma to be a positive force that leads to innovation and change. These poems work to explore expressly feminine traumas--specifically familial physical violence, sexual violence, and incest--in order to find the confluence of these two theories. Accordingly, the speaker, in this post-traumatic state, revels in the Freudian, exploring her "non-traditional" desires, despite not always being cognizant of why those desires, in fact, exist. These poems, concerned with affective resonance, consider the repercussions of violence on the speaker's relation of self to other (parent, lover, mentor, and child figures all feature prominently), self to institution (specifically Catholicism), and, ultimately, self to world at large. The collection, divided into four tone-centered sections, takes the reader on a journey with a speaker who first grapples with memory and articulation of trauma before beginning to consider it a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. The Threshing Place, in this way, becomes a thought experiment--exploring the possibilities that arise when one pays due credence to calamity while also refusing to live in its darkness.
