Which way did I go?: Motion correspondence with a Ternus display projected into three-dimensions

The present study examined the effects of a depth manipulation on the perception of apparent motion in a Ternus display. Twenty-two volunteers each viewed four conditions of a Ternus display with varying interstimulus intervals, and reported the type of motion perceived (either "group" or "element" (cf. Pantle & Picciano, 1976)). The conditions included a standard condition with elements presented in the frontal plane, a condition with elements depicted as receding in depth (using monoscopic depth cues), and two frontal plane conditions designed to bias towards either "group" or "element" motion. The results indicate that despite changes to element size in the depth-cued condition that could bias towards a perception "element" motion, "group" motion was readily perceived. This suggests that the spatial factors that determine "group" motion in a Ternus display operate similarly in two-dimensions and depicted depth.
