Microwave Transmission Measurements Using a Radiometer System

This thesis focuses on the design, simulation, and characterization of a Total Power Radiometer, operating at Ka-Band. The design of the Total Power Radiometer relies upon several factors including, accuracy, stability, and sensitivity. Weighing these factors leads to the design and simulation of a Total Power Radiometer with 0.1 K sensitivity. Several simulations of the Total Power Radiometer are presented in this thesis, utilizing both ideal and non-ideal circumstances. Using Simulink it is shown that the simulation of the designed Total Power Radiometer achieves the desired sensitivity of at most 0.1 K for input effective temperatures above 30 K. Based upon Simulink simulations a microwave radiometer was fabricated, designed, and characterized. Utilizing a temperature controlled plate the fabricated prototype radiometer met the design requirements.
