Mesoporous Carbon/Silica Encapsulated Molybdenum and Ruthenium Nanocatalysts For Green Chemistry Applications

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Nanocatalysts have received numerous research interests recently, owing to advancement in material chemistry and nanotechnology. With well-defined size, shape, composition and structure, nanocatalysts have huge potential to be used as active and selective catalysts for a wide range of catalytic reactions. This PhD project focuses on developing active, selective and stable nanocatalysts for green chemistry applications. In this work, molybdenum oxide and ruthenium nanoparticles were selected as model metal oxide and metal compounds to be encapsulated within mesoporous carbon and silica supports. The resulted nanocatalysts (e.g., Mo@C, H4SiMo12O40@mSiO2, Mo/mSiO2, and Ru@mSiO2) have been demonstrated to be efficient and robust catalysts for Friedel-Crafts alkylation, oxidative desulfurization, and carbon dioxide hydrogenation reactions.
