Meanwhile, students of language shift would demonstrate how code-switching happens during the process of shifting. Nevertheless, no one has yet proven or disproven that code-switching must happen in order to complete a shifting process. This thesis aims to answer to this sociolinguistic gap, looking into the sociological, psychological as well as the grammatical aspects of code-switching and language shift. Teochew dialect of Penang Island is specially examined for the fact that the dialect is spoken by the second largest group of overseas Chinese in the island enclosure. This paper has arrived at a conclusion whereby code-switching is NOT an indispensable stage in language shift, after analyzing 50 monologue corpus gathered via the Pear Stories video.
