Structural Behaviour of Concrete Filled Steel Tubes With High Strength Materials.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study carried out experimental investigations on material properties of ultra-high strength concrete (UHSC) and high strength steel (HSS), stub concrete filled steel tube (CFST) columns, CFST beams, and slender CFST beam-columns. For evaluation, test results were compared with Eurocode 4 predictions. It was found that ultra-high resistance could be achieved. Therefore, they are most suitable to be applied in high-rise constructions. It was also found that Eurocode 4 limitations on materials can be extended to UHSC and HSS with minor modifications. In addition, this study investigated preload effect on the resistance of CFST columns. Design formulae were proposed to consider the preload effect. It was found that a significant reduction in ultimate resistance can be produced under high preload. In conclusion, this study has made a significant contribution to fill the gap in the research on the structural behaviour of CFSTs with UHSC, HSS and preload effect.
