A HOLISTIC MHEALTH APPROACH INTEGRATING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, NUTRITION, AND MENTAL HEALTH STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE WELL-BEING IN ADULTS
Abstract
dc:description.abstractAs global populations age, shifting healthcare from treatment to prevention is increasingly vital. Holistic mobile health (mHealth) interventions that integrate physical activity, nutrition, and mental health offer promising preventive strategies, yet evidence in Asian contexts remains limited. Guided by the behavioural epidemiology framework, this thesis comprises three interconnected studies. Study 1 found that engaging in multiple health behaviours was associated with reduced psychological distress and improved mental well-being, highlighting the need for integrated lifestyle and mental health interventions. Study 2 reviewed 34 holistic mHealth interventions among general adults, showing modest improvements in weight and stress, and highlighting the need for rigorous trials and greater Asian representation. Study 3 piloted LVL UP, an adaptive mHealth coaching intervention in Singapore, demonstrating feasibility and promising mental health outcomes. This thesis offers foundational insights into the design and implementation of holistic mHealth strategies tailored to the evolving needs of ageing, digitally connected societies.
