Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis dissertation examines the practices of modern Chinese theater during the first three decades of the twentieth century, focusing on the portrayal of different realities. It challenges the notion that huaju (spoken drama) was the sole orthodox approach to realism. While huaju closely followed the performance model of script and rehearsal, this dissertation investigates alternative practices that drew inspiration from the nineteenth-century Euro-American theater but deviated from the standards of Ibsenian social realism and Stanislavskian psychological realism. This was an extensive archival research aimed at uncovering these nonconforming practices within the realm of realism.
