A study on micro-scale combustion

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Based on a review of microcombustion, the objectives of this study are set up. To achieve these objectives, several steps such as scale analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental investigations have been applied to combustion in a cylindrical microcombustor. Scale analysis helps to specify the ratio of radial to axial heat conduction, and numerical simulation has shown that the temperature difference between the flame and the internal wall is linear in the axial direction. Making use of the analytical results, an equation for predicting flame temperature has been derived and validated by experiment. Both simulation and experiment show that wall thickness and step height of the microcombustor affect wall temperature drastically. Furthermore, a thermal model for microcombustion is set up. Given this thermal model, entropy generation during microcombustion is formulated, and operating parameters for optimum performance are obtained. Finally, making use of the thermal model and entropy generation, a set of combustion rules is proposed.
