QUINODIMETHANES - AN EFFECTIVE STABILIZATION STRATEGY FOR POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe union of a quinodimethane (QDM) core with a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) framework led to the birth of a new class of quinoidal polycyclic/heterocyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) with numerous potential applications in materials chemistry. Over the years, intensive research efforts involving experimental and theoretical based investigative studies have strived to paint a complete picture of the intricate structure-diradical character-physical property relationship of these interesting quinoidal compounds. This would greatly aid in the future tailor-design and synthesis of functional PH based materials. In this thesis, we focused on the ground state tuning of a series of sulfur and nitrogen-containing quinoidal heteroacene analogues containing a rare mix of both diradical and dipolar/zwitterionic characters, and conducted systematic investigations on how their complex structure-property relationship changes with various structural modifications to their 1. QDM chain length, 2. QDM fusion mode, 3. number of aromatic sextet rings and 4. heteroatom type.
