A TRANSPORT MECHANISM FOR REALTIME APPLICATIONS

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Realtime communication is perhaps the most critical component of any industry associated with process control, manufacturing and multimedia. Realtime aspect is essential to facilitate the coordination among the multitude of processes in such industries. There are many communication mechanisms existing for real time data acquisition and processing. But these mechanisms cater to the various islands of automated networks. There is a great demand in the industry for an approach to interconnect realtime systems in the control networks with the conventional data networks. Enterprise management is expected to dominate the Information Technology industry in the coming decades. The enterprise management extends beyond the notion or workflow in an organizational structure. The purpose of this research is to develop a process oriented workflow where the control networks and the data networks interact with each other seamlessly. There is a need for the development or a mechanism through which flow of information is possible both in the horizontal and vertical application segments. The convergence of Computer, Communication and Control forms the basis of this research. The networked multimedia though at its infancy. linds many applications in the real time industry. The flow of multiple streams of data like voice, video, images and text are essential for remote fault correction and technical supervision. The integration of data streams with differing traffic characteristics with the envisioned transport mechanism is another goal of this research. This thesis discusses a new transport mechanism that caters to the real time applications. The proposed new model. called TRlSHUL offers a simple to use application programming interface routines to enable realtimc group communication. The concept of quality or service. group communication paradigm. application oriented transport interface and reconfigurability are few of the rich set of features TRISHUL incorporates. TRISHUL include a Reconfigurable Real time Transport Protocol. a Network Access Layer Protocol. and a Stream Protocol (ST-II). TRISHUL offers a connection oriented service to the higher layers. The real time data is captured ii using devices like programmable logic controller by a realtime server that runs a classic microkernel based QNX operating system.
