IMPROVISATION AS EVOLUTION : THE TAIWANESE GEZAIXI

This thesis aims to study the various ways in which the Taiwanese Gezaixi has developed through a constant process of improvisation. This improvisation is manifested in its adoption of and interaction with other theatre traditions; the flexible interchanging of its internal elements to generate variations of itself; and finally its reaction to external forces. These external forces include cultural policies, the rapid modernisation of society and the changing social and economic climate.
