Thus, in Exp.1, we explored the behavioral associations between different types of visual features and emotions systematically by using a perceptual rating task. In Exp. 2 and Exp. 3 we tested the robustness/automaticity of the associations with the Continuous Flashing Suppression (CFS) paradigm. Finally, in Exp.4 we delineated the neural mechanisms of emotion-shape association in one of our strongest observed associative effects. In general, our results show that the perception of visual features such as color, spatial frequency, size and shape can be associated with specific emotions behaviorally. However, only shape can be automatically associated with emotions. Moreover, emotion-shape association can be decoded in the middle cingulum and orbital frontal gyrus.
