PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIENCE & PHYSICAL FUNCTION AMONG OLDER ADULTS WITH HIP FRACTURE SURGERY IN SINGAPORE

With the ultimate goal to investigate the association between psychological resilience and physical function among older adults with hip fracture (one of the most common severe adverse life events affecting the older adults), in this thesis I performed four studies. First, I systematically reviewed the literature on prognostic factors of physical function among older adults with hip fracture. Second, I examined whether mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as a psychological factor at pre-fracture, was associated with physical HRQoL among older adults after hip fracture surgery. Third, I identified a commonly used scale of psychological resilience, the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC10) and evaluated its measurement properties among older adults with hip fracture. Finally, I prospectively investigated the association between pre-fracture psychological resilience (measured by CD-RISC10) and physical function among older adults with surgically treated hip fracture in Singapore. In the last chapter, I discussed the major contributions and limitations of the four studies, followed by a proposal for three lines of investigations that are natural outgrowths of this work.
