Development and application of a web-based kanban system

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Many manufacturing and assembly environments today have adopted the just-in-time (JIT) management philosophy to streamline material flow and attain a lean manufacturing system. One of the main techniques employed in JIT management is the Kanban system. The advent of Internet and Web-based technology in recent years has led to the exploration of opportunities to integrate the Kanban system with the Web-based technology to better manage the manufacturing logistics and supply chain within JIT management. In this thesis, the traditional Kanban system model and several variations of this model are reviewed. A Web-based Kanban system model is also being proposed. Subsequently, a working prototype of the Web-based Kanban system using Java Server Pages (JSP) is developed after the assessment of several other Web-based technologies. The prototype will serve as a test-bed platform for the manufacturing assembly industry. An industrial case study using the proposed Web-based Kanban system is also carried out.
