DEVELOPING AND TESTING THE PRELIMINARY EFFECTS OF STOMA PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAMME ON OUTCOMES OF COLORECTAL PATIENTS WITH STOMA: A MIXED METHOD STUDY
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis is a sequential embedded mixed methods study containing three phases, exploring patients’ experiences in care of stoma during initial post-operative period for the development of a STOMA Psychosocial intervention programme and examined its effectiveness on outcomes of colorectal patients with newly formed stoma. Phase one of the study undertook a qualitative exploration of experiences of 12 patients in care of stoma. The Phase Two study translated an essential instrument the Acceptance of Chronic Health Condition (ACHC) (stoma) scale and tested its psychometric properties with 100 patients. The STOMA psychosocial intervention programme in Phase three study was examined using a two-group pre-test and post-test pilot randomised controlled trial with 43 participants. The stoma care self-efficacy, acceptance of the stoma, level of stoma proficiency, length of hospital stay, as well as anxiety and depression, and quality of life were measured. This study has developed a feasible and applicable psychosocial intervention programme.
