In Singapore Hokkien, this is reflected in the large number of English and Malay loanwords as a result of language contact. When loanwords from the source language enter a recipient language, they would be altered to conform to the phonology of the latter, and be subjected to its phonological rules. This paper seeks to look into the phonological processes and sound changes that English loanwords undergo as it enters Singapore Hokkien, focusing on the adaptation of consonants and vowels. By studying real examples from the collection of lexical corpus, this paper will examine in detail how phonemes from the English language are being adapted into Singapore Hokkien, and prove that loanword adaption in Singapore Hokkien conforms to the Perception-Phonology approach in loanword phonology.","abstract_html":"Lexical borrowings, or simply, loanwords, are adoption of vocabulary items from another language or dialect.
