With a particular focus on real-world problems faced by transit agencies and operators, this thesis follows a sequential approach and can be divided into three parts: (1) understanding transit service reliability, (2) modeling transit service reliability and (3) developing methodologies to enhance transit service reliability. The three parts are arranged around general topics and areas of interest in urban transit research. The thesis contributes new insights and knowledge on using smart card data to understand, model and enhance urban transit reliability.
