DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL MICROCAPSULES AND CELLULOSE-BASED BIOSORBENTS FOR POLLUTANTS REMOVAL FROM WATER
Abstract
dc:description.abstractARSENIC CONTAMINATION IN DRINKING WATER CAN CAUSE DELETERIOUS HEALTH HAZARDS, SUCH AS CANCER AND SKIN DISEASES. GROWING USE OF NANOPARTICLES IN HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS CAN ALSO CAUSE ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION, OWING TO THE IMPROPER HANDLING OF WASTES AND EFFLUENTS. HENCE THERE IS A NEED FOR COST-EFFECTIVE YET HIGHLY EFFICIENT ADSORBENTS FOR THE REMOVAL OF THESE POLLUTANTS FROM WATER. IN THE FIRST PART OF THE THESIS, NOVEL ADSORBENTS IN THE FORM OF METAL OXIDES INCORPORATED MICROCAPSULES AND SAWDUST WERE PREPARED FOR THE EXTRACTION OF ARSENIC FROM WATER. THE ADSORBENTS CAN BE USED IN A WIDE PH RANGE FOR THE REMOVAL OF BOTH ARSENITE AND ARSENATE ANIONS FROM WATER. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE THESIS, POROUS FUNCTIONALIZED MICROCAPSULES WERE SYNTHESIZED FOR THE REMOVAL OF AG AND AU NANOPARTICLES FROM WATER. AN ION EXCHANGE-BASED NANOPARTICLE DETECTION METHOD WAS ALSO DEVELOPED BY MODIFICATION OF THE CAPSULES USING FITC. FUNCTIONALIZED PAPER WAS ALSO PREPARED FOR THE REMOVAL OF HEAVY METAL IONS AND
