Preparation of oriented molybdenum disulfide thin films for photoelectrochemical energy havesting applications

Group VI layered transition metal dichacogenides (LTMDs) have been considered as good candidates of semiconductor electrodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar cells due to their suitable band gap for solar energy absorption and extremely good stability. However, the scalable synthesis of bulk single crystals of LTMDs remains a challenge, limiting the development of their application in solar cells. On the other hand, large-area ultra-thin films of LTMDs can be readily synthesized, providing an opportunity for their implementation into application. In this thesis, I will introduce the in-house setup for photoelectrochemical measurements. I will also report on the preparation and characterization of large-area ultra-thin films of MoS2 from chemical exfoliation and sulfurization of evaporated MoOx. Finally, I will discuss the issues and challenges of photoelectrochemical measurements.
