Development of a subcortical emphasized physical human head model for evaluation of deep brain source contribution to scalp EEG
Abstract
dc:description.abstractElectroencephalography (EEG) technique has been extensively utilized in clinical and research settings for brain disorder related disease monitoring and cognitive science studies. Quantifying EEG rhythms through low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) analysis could further provide important biomarkers to determine the underlying neuronal activities in the brain. However, the performance of LORETA method applied for deep brain source localization has not been studied before. Thus, this research aims to develop a novel subcortical emphasized physical human head model for evaluation of deep brain source contribution to scalp EEG recordings. The novelty of the head model is attributed to its artificial neuronal sources being distributed not only in brain cortex, but also in subcortical region and deep brain. Results showed that LORETA method is capable of localizing subcortical neuronal activities in thalamus and corpus callosum. Therefore, non-invasive EEG technique could be applied for monitoring brain disorders which originate at these locations.
