Novel Aspects of Localization, Delocalization, and Anomalous Transport in One-dimensional Systems

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

In this thesis, we investigate disorder-induced effects in some newly discovered or not fully explored one-dimensional (1D) systems that are related to the current research frontiers, e.g., graphene and topological insulators. Specifically, we firstly study 1D disordered graphene superlattices, and show that both localization and delocalization can exist in these systems. We also show that disorder can help collimate electron beams in the superlattice. Then we move to another novel system, a disordered quantum walk (QW) model. We demonstrate that our QW model possesses the physics of off-diagonal disorder, and propose an experimental realization of the delocalized off-diagonal disordered state using the adiabatic theorem. Lastly, we study an effectively disordered periodically driven system, the relativistic kicked-rotor. We investigate disorder effects in our driven system and find that its natural yet special configurations of disorder leads to superballistic transport in the momentum space.
