OPERATIONALIZING A PRIVATE 5G NETWORK FOR EXPEDITIONARY USE

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

According to the Department of Defense’s (DOD) 2020 Fifth Generation (5G) Strategy, the accelerated deployment of 5G technology is critical to maintaining the nation’s long-term economic and military advantage. 5G wireless technology promises higher data rates, lower latency, and greater customizability than previous generations of cellular technology. This thesis experiments with the functionality and scalability of one 5G network-in-a-box solution for expeditionary use, envisioning a scenario of a forward-deployed tactical unit using this network for internal communications amongst the unit’s personnel, sensors, and platforms. This research ultimately seeks to provide a proof of concept by documenting how non-native Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards can be provisioned to connect to this network, analyzing the diversity of compatible user equipment, reporting on intra-network communication options, providing size, weight, power, and cost considerations, and evaluating the network’s end-to-end throughput given the network’s ciphering algorithm options.
