The ability to present information in both an informative and entertaining way can lead to an enhanced quality of life for an increasingly larger segment of the world's population. However, information generated in a multimedia format presents special challenges for communication networks. This thesis is an attempt to understand the impact of multimedia computing as it relates to the transmission requirements to support large volume data exchange in a distributed computing environment. With a good understanding of these requirements one will be better equipped to evaluate the various physical transmission media and communication services available to meet the high transmission demands imposed by multimedia data exchange.","abstract_html":"Multimedia holds the promise of increased knowledge, creativity and productivity for virtually any application that can be imagined.
