Although DOD and Navy policies and guidance support standardization, Navy programs have not been successful in minimizing nonstandard parts in weapons designs. This thesis attempts to identify the supply support problems caused by a lack of inventory standardization and to determine the extent of these problems. A model was developed to estimate the costs resulting from non-standardization of inventory. The model demonstrated that through inventory standardization the Navy could annually save millions of dollars. The savings achieved by reducing nonstandard parts and consolidating items with similar form, fit, and function can be re-invested in inventory to improve depth.
