A precise determiniation of the fine structure constants for Cr(3⁺) in ruby.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe aluminum oxide crystal, , Al₂0₃, doped with a small amount of chromium, which is called ruby, is widely used in solid state physics research and applications. The experimental work described in this thesis is concerned with the precise determination of three important paramagnetic resonance parameters of the ruby crystal at room temperature. These are the two spectroscopic splitting factors ( g װ . and g┴ ) and the crystal field splitting (D) of the chromium ion energy levels. The values obtained are: g װ + 1.98145 + .00020, g┴ = 1.98137 + .00067, D = 5.74674 + .00080 Kmc/sec.
