The Reliability of Manual Ultrasonics in Detecting Internal Corrosion Within Carbon Steel Pipework
Abstract
dc:description.abstractManual ultrasonics (MUT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique used to detect wall thickness measurements on a variety of components within the oil and gas industry. This research aims to critically appraise the factors that affect the MUT task and apply the findings to make the necessary adjustments to ensure MUT is reliable, this will guarantee the continued safe operation of assets in the UK energy supply chain. An internal corrosion trial was set up to gather data on MUT using the standard probe and a novel developed magnetic probe coupler (MPC) the data gathered was statistically analysed to see if the MPC improved the reliability of the test The findings from this research could be implemented in a large-scale trial and introduced to organisations within industry to share and collaborate which in turn would further improve the reliability of MUT and ensure additional development of the MPC.<br/>
