The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Sustainable Development: An Assessment of the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) Corporations in Namibia
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis study examines the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in advancing sustainable development within Namibia's Electricity Supply Industry (ESI). The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the alignment of CSR practices with national development objectives and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting their role in fostering social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic development. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a comprehensive literature review with quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews conducted among key stakeholders in Namibia’s ESI. Comparative case studies from South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe were also used to contextualize regional CSR practices. Findings reveal that while Namibia's ESI corporations actively engage in initiatives such as rural electrification and community development, significant gaps remain in stakeholder engagement, standardized reporting, and the integration of CSR into corporate strategy. The study recommends a standardized CSR framework for the ESI sector that ensures alignment with national and global sustainability objectives while fostering transparency and accountability. The research provides practical guidance for policymakers, business executives, and development professionals aiming to improve the impact of CSR in areas with limited resources.<br/>
