Rheological Study of Concentrated Silica Suspensions

<p>Concentrated suspensions of silica in water were investigated using a rotational viscometer and a Zeta-Meter. The viscometric data was analyzed for shear dependence, solid concentration dependence and pH dependence. The data for electrophoretic mobility was analyzed for pH dependence.</p><p>The experimental data was applied to the Bingham plastic model and the power law model and the power law model was found to describe the experimental data more closely than the Bingham plastic model. The parameters for these two models were correlated to solids concentration, pH and electrophoretic mobility.</p><p>Effect of particle size on apparent viscosity was also studied but no correlations were attempted.</p><p>A model was proposed for the relationship between pH and electronophoretic mobility.</p><p>A suspension of lignite in water was found to fit the Bingham plastic model</p>
