Analysis of Lacustrine Deposits of Custer Lookout and Leftor Butte, Stark County, North Dakota
Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>Stark County, North Dakota has several limestone-capped buttes. These units are commonly considered to be of lacustrine origin, although no specific paleoenvironmental analysis has been conducted. The purpose of this research was to determine if petrographic or other laboratory evidence supports a lacustrine origin for these units. Methods included collecting limestone caprock samples from two buttes in question, Custer Lookout and Lefor Butte. Thin sections were made to help determine paleosetting of the limestone units through petrographic analysis and fossil allochems. Fossil ostracods and a charaphyte were critical in determining the lacustrine origin of the limestone beds. </p>
