Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>RAISED IN A SHOCKWAVE is a Young Adult Science Fiction novel centering around a young girl who joins a mutual aid organization focused on creating a network of community and support for a newly-birthed group of superhumans. The themes of the book include the importance of forming bonds across marginalized communities, the creation of the self as a self-made, joyful exercise in horror, and the deconstruction and examination of superhero stories as a genre. The book is preceded by an analysis of the DC Comics cartoon <em>Static Shock,</em> one of my chief influences for this project. This analysis is focused on the ways the show handles ideas around marginalization, inhuman bodies, and heroic infrastructure.</p>
