STRAIN AND TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT FROM DISTRIBUTED FIBER OPTIC SENSORS IN PERFORMANCE-BASED FIRE ENGINEERING

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

<p>"Strain and temperature measurement of steel and concrete structures under fires is critical to the understanding of structural performance yet historically challenging due to a significant gap in measurement science. This Ph.D. study characterizes in six parts low-cost distributed fiber optic sensors and applies them to strain, and temperature measurements based on Rayleigh and Brillouin light scattering. The first part aims to quantify the Rayleigh scattering based measurement accuracy of distributed fiber optic sensors under a heating-holding load protocol and characterize the effect of polymer coating on the sensors as the polymer softens and melts at elevated temperatures. The second part aims to quantify the effectiveness and limitation of distributed fiber optic sensors without coatings for measuring temperature and strain of a steel plate subjected to a local constant temperature. The third part experimentally investigates the heat treatment effect on the measurement of distributed fiber optic temperature, and numerically investigates the effect of the thermal expansion of the coatings on the optical fiber core strains. The fourth part experimentally characterizes the effects of multilayer coatings on the performance of distributed fiber optic sensors embedded in mortar specimens as the coatings experience softening and melting at high temperature. The fifth part aims to develop a spiral deployment scheme of a distributed fiber optic sensor and monitor/assess the post-tensioned force in 7-wire twisted steel cables based on pulse-pre-pump Brillouin optical time domain analysis. Finally, distributed fiber optic measurements of strain and temperature in long-span composite floor beams with simple shear connections are performed under compartment fires"--Abstract, p. iv</p>
