SURFACE MODIFICATION TO IMPROVE THE ELECTROCHEMICAL PERFORMANCE OF CATHODE MATERIALS FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES AND SODIUM-ION BATTERIES

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

<p>"The specific capacity of active materials as well as their cycling stability are the main limiting factors for the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIB). Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is considered as a promising surface modification method to enhance the electrochemical performance of active materials for LIBs and SIBs.</p> <p>In this research, we are committed to using ALD to modify the cathode materials of LIB, by coating different films on the surface of different cathode materials and constructing a stable and favorable interface layer for lithium-ion transport, so that we can protect the active materials from the influence of organic liquid electrolytes, improve the electrical and ionic conductivity of active materials, and lead to the electrochemical performance enhancement of the materials. My first research explained how the composite AlF3-Al2O3 film obtained by ALD enhanced the electrochemical performance of Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LRNMC). My second work described a strategy of applying ALD to remove the undesirable by-products on the surface of Ni-rich cathode materials, LiNi0.8Mn0.1CO0.1 (NMC811), due to exposure to humidity, and recovery the electrochemical performance of NMC811. On the basis of our study, the surface modification places an important role in the electrochemical performance improvement"--Abstract, p. iv</p>
