Statistical methods for the analysis of aerosol concentration data
Abstract
dc:description.abstract"Aerosols, their characteristics, and their environmental impacts are topics of basic and applied science and are studied by physicists, chemists, meteorologists, as well as by statisticians. The methodology of aerosol data analysis is a substantial part of aerosol science. The accuracy of aerosol particulate measurements depends on instrumental, physical and human limitations, and experiment uncertainty. Measurement precision and calibration correction provided by the instrument manufacturers may not always directly apply to all experimental settings. This dissertation presents statistical methods for assessing and/or improving accuracy of measurements, developing models for particulate data, and for correcting potential bias. A case study is used to introduce a method for mismatch and saturation correction for a situation where multiple instruments measure different attributes of an air sample. The method needs few assumptions and little computational requirements. Simulations under a variety of settings are also studied. Possible applications are on analysis of aerosol particulate data or other complex environmental data"--Abstract, page iii.
