Miss Floretta: The Creation of a Character and a Curriculum

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Wagner, Laura. M.A. Summer 2010 Integrated Arts Education Miss Floretta: The Creation of a Character and a Curriculum Chairperson: Karen Kaufmann This project defines the creation of an original character by building her from the ground up, giving her creation a purpose and releasing her into the world with a mission. The mission: to educate preschool children on the fundamental necessity for embracing and expressing their creative selves through the medium of Integrated Arts Education, Participatory Storytelling and American Sign Language (ASL). Preschool aged children are primed for learning. The earlier the arts are introduced into their lives, the more likely they may travel down the path towards learning. Miss Floretta is a friendly character who provides a nurturing, safe and non-judgmental environment in which children can feel comfortable as they artistically blossom. To complete this mission, the character of Miss Floretta is accompanied by an original curriculum of fourteen lesson plans specifically designed, crafted and executed to serve as a supplemental enrichment program for an already established preschool curriculum (in this case: Ingomar Child Enrichment Center, Ingomar, PA). Thus, the Creative Arts Program (CAPs) was born to provide an outlet for age-appropriate learning through exposure to and active participation in storytelling, Integrated Arts Education and American Sign Language.
