Final Inventory Report Glacier National Park, Lake Sherburne Archeological Inventory & Report, RM-CESU Cooperative Agreement: CA-1200-99-007

The University of Montana Department of Anthropology conducted an inventory and assessment of Lake Sherburne archeological sites in August-September, 2007. This inventory and assessment provides Glacier National Park managers with important data related to cultural resource management needs and visitor interpretation of Lake Sherburne archeological sites. This inventory draws heavily from the prior Inventory and Assessment of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park carried out by Dr. Brian O.K. Reeves from 1993-1996 which documented over 500 sites in the International Peace Park and 60 sites in the vicinity of the Park (2003), including 46 around Lake Sherburne in the current project area. These sites range from Paleoindian to post-contact. During the current 2007 study, the University of Montana Department of Anthropology’s goal was to re-identify these 46 sites and determine their condition and eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. During the survey, the UM team was only able to relocate 13 of the previously-identified 46 sites. Based on the low percentage of re-identified sites—less than a 30 percent success rate—the fluctuating lake levels of the dam are having a detrimental effect on archeological resources around Lake Sherburne.
