Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Across the world, forest harvesting is one of the human activities having the greatest impact on biodiversity. Many studies have been conducted to better understand these impacts in the hope of minimizing their consequences. In New Brunswick, one type of "partial harvesting" is increasingly being used Because only a fraction of the trees are harvested, these practices are generally considered to have a lower impact than other silvicultural treatments, such as clear cutting. However, they can still have an influence on animal populations. In the ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla), this treatment often causes a reduction in population densities. Yet, the mechanisms behind this negative response are still poorly understood. As one of the species most sensitive to partial harvesting, the ovenbird may represent an umbrella to conserve sympatric species associated with mature hardwood and mixed forest stands. Identifying the sources of information that are being used by individuals when they choose a territory is therefore of considerable importance not only for the ovenbird, but also for other species with which it coexists.
