Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of this research was to determine the use of drugs, attitudes and beliefs, knowledge and necessity of an education program about drugs. The survey was done among stduents in upper elementary and secondary schools (3,774) and in post-secondary institutions, (1,212) among their parents (1,888) and selected professionals (489). A six part questionnaire (one) for each group) pertained to drug use, demographic characteristics, attitudes and beliefs about drugs, necessity of a drug information program, ways and means of organizing such a program and knowledge about drugs. Students answered the questionnaire in the classroom while parents and professionals were to reply by mail. Rates of response were 86.5% for students in upper elementary and secondary schools, 53.1% for students in post-secondary institutions, 27.3% for parents and 40.1% for professionals. Results: The results indicated that alcohol and tobacco were still the prederred drugs for the four groups. For students, marijuana use was third. For both adult groups use of other drugs was minimal. Most respondents did not agree to legalization of marijuana. Students in post-secondary institutions were more permissive than the other groups. All groups agreed that a drug information program was necessary. The type of program varied from group but most repondents agreed that lectures with discussions were the best type of program. Also, most respondents agreed that information about drugs should begin in upper elementary school. The majority of respondents had poor knowledge of drugs and their effects except professionals who scored higher than the other groups. Recommendations for a drug information program based on the results were given.
