L' inventaire des réponses volontaires à la discrimination sexiste: l'engagement et le désengagement à l'endroit de la discrimination sexiste et les retombées sur la santé mentale

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Two studies were conducted to validate the Sexist Discrimination Voluntary Response Inventory (SDVRI). In the first study, 282 women completed an online bilingual (French and English) survey on life experiences, self-perceptions and mental health. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the SDVRI reflects the voluntary coping responses of the Responses to Stigma-Related Stressors model (Miller & Kaiser, 2001), that is, disengagement (e.g., I tried to avoid the person who acted inappropriately towards me), engagement with primary control (PC) (e.g. I tried to educate the perpetrator by providing a different point of view) and engagement with secondary control (SC) (e.g. I reminded myself that work/school is not everything). The aim of Study 2 was to investigate the relationship between encounters with sexist events, voluntary coping responses and mental health, in light of the tenets of the Responses to Stigma-Related Stressors model (Miller & Kaiser, 2001). Participants consisted of 242 women who completed a bilingual online survey. As with the first study, the three categories of responses to SDVRI were presented to respondents. The Schedule of Sexist Events (Klonoff & Landrine, 1995) was used to assess perceptions of women's personal encounters with discrimination. Psychological symptoms were assessed using the anxiety and depression subscales of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (Derogatis, Lipman, Rickels, Uhlenhuth, & Covi, 1974). Positive well-being was measured using a shortened version of the Positive Well-Being Scale (Ryff & Keyes, 1995).
