Galvanic skin response variations of neurotics low/high on extraversion to music
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of two types of music (exciting vs relaxing) on the GSR responses of male and female neurotics low/high on extraversion. Eysenck's and Gray's views on the basic structure of personality dimensions were also tested to enlighten their components in relation to the influence of music as a variable. Thirty two subjects were selected by means of the EPI and constituted the four major groups of neurotics low on extraversion (male and female) and neurotics high on extraversion (male and female). Each subject was exposed to eight minute periods of the two types of music and their responses were measured on the GSR for latency, magnitude, rate of habituation, and background activity. They then answered a rating scale on the effectiveness of each type of music. Results indicated that subjects in general gave higher initial responses to the exciting than to the relaxing music. Significant differences between groups were only found at the second minute of stimulus onset for both types of music. Subjects had more variability in responses to the exciting music, and males had a higher level of responsiveness than females to the relaxing music. Varied signidicant differences were expressed between groups during the last three minutes, indicating response decrements to the stimuli presented. No signidicant correlations were found between groups' ratings and their GSR responses. Neurotics low on extraversion showed a negative correlation(nonsignificant) to both types of music. Finally, females seemed to be less aroused than males by a relaxing type of music. Eysenck's and Gray's basic notions were thus only supported to a certain extent. It would be important in further research to use control groups with more differentiated levels of extraversion. Other physiological measures have been proposed to accompany the GSR in order to have more meaningful comparisons.
