Thermionic emission from a recrystallized tungsten filament

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

"A projection diode similar to the one developed by Gardner (]6) was constructed to measure the point-by-point thermionic emission parameters of a tungsten single crystal with {110} zone 8° to 10° off filament axis. Pecrystallization of the filament was achieved by the Robinson (27) method of heating treatment. The average <}>* and A* were found to be 4.485 ± 0.055 volts and 49 ± 16 amp per (cm deg)2 respectively. In the various crystallographic directions close to the {110} zone, <f> was 4.80V [110], 4.68V [112], 4.35V [116] and 4.62V [100]. It was evident that the average work function has strong dependence on the low work function patches as predicted by theory. There is strong evidence that a polycrystalline and a single crystal filament have equivalent high and low work function patch distributions."
