Studies on the nature of red blood cell hemolysis on storage and the nature of the red blood cell membrane acetylcholinesterase

"In a series of papers, Holland, Greig and others (1-8) have presented evidence in favour of the view that the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) of the red blood cells (RBC) is concerned with the maintenance of the integrity of the cells Anderson and Pethica (9) have reported that in stored citrated blood, the release of RBC ^ChE seemed to coincide with the onset of hemolysis. In vivo (10, 11) and in vitro (12, 13) experiments by other investigators, however, provided no evidence that AChE is essential for the maintenance of normal RBC life spanc In view of their observations it is of great interest to investigate, in vitro, the correlation between the rate of release of the enzyme and viability of the RBC in the blood stored for some time . For this purpose samples from blood banks stored for about 3 weeks were chosen."
